On Saturday 22 February 2003, Debating SA held its inaugural Training Extravaganza, attended by over 200 people including students, Parents and teachers from Adelaide High School, Allenby Gardens Primary School, Annesley College, Belair Primary School, Blackforest Primary School, Blackwood High School, Cabra College, Charles Campbell Secondary School, East Adelaide Primary School, Glenunga International High School, Grange Schools, Immanuel College, King’s Baptist Grammar, Linden Park Primary School, Marryatville High School, Mitcham Primary School, Modbury High School, Norton Summit Primary School, Parafield Gardens High School, Pembroke School, Prince Alfred College, Pulteney Grammar School, Sacred Heart College, St Patrick’s School, Sunrise Christian School, Thomas More College, Unley High School and Whitefriars School.
Over 20 volunteers from Debating SA presented training courses for all year levels, including Point of Information, Junior level, Cross Examinations, etc.
During the afternoon Junior session, John Maxwell and his team of Peer Adjudicators presented to over 50 students and their teachers. The students prepared and then presented debates in front of a large audience of parents. This session gave the students a full view of what debating in the Schools Competition is all about.
While the students were learning to debate from John, their parents were finding out everything that they needed to know about how and where to find information about their commitments and how the Association functions. Trish Branson, with a guest appearance from Julie Miller, presented a two hour session for parents which was the topic of much conversation over sausages. In another room, 20 senior students were learning the finer points of Cross Examination and Point of Information debates from our Senior Adjudicator team of Malcolm Bowes, Bryn Roberts and William Brodie-Tyrrell.
Upstairs, Amy Challans and Kate Annells took the new Year 8 & 9 students through the debating process to ensure that they understood what is required and were comfortable with debating.
We held a very successful sausage sizzle with the aid of Woolworths Norwood, who gave us a $20 voucher to purchase sausages. During the day we raised $206 for future Have a Go workshops around Adelaide.
