2007 Debating Training

To help debaters prepare for the 2007 Debating Season, Debating SA recently held training workshops. Presented by Debating SA’s Training and Development Officer, Sonja Lowen, the workshops proved a huge success with many students, teachers and parents commenting on the great learning experience.

The Primary School sessions saw 40 students attend with their parents and teachers on each of the Saturday and Sunday. Students were introduced to the basic concepts of debate and then were given the opportunity to prepare and present a debate on the topic “That cats are better than dogs.”

Participants came from a wide range of schools including; Belair Schools, Black Forest Primary School, Kidman Park Primary School, Lenswood Primary School, Mercedes College, Mitcham Primary School, Pedare Christian College, Pulteney Grammar School, Rostrevor College, Stirling East Primary School, St Aloysius College and St Michael’s Lutheran Primary School

The Secondary School sessions saw 14 participants on each of the Saturday and Sunday prepare and present a debate. The Saturday session introduced Year 8 and 9 debaters to the basic concepts of debating and gave students the opportunity to prepare and present a debate on the topic “That graffiti is art.”, while the Sunday session focused on logical argument and fallacies. Participants were from; Adelaide High School, Brighton Secondary School, Cabra Dominican College, Heathfield High School, Riverbank School, Thomas More College, Unley High School and Westminster School.

Debating SA would like to thank all parents and teachers who came along to help students during the days. A special thank you to Pembroke School for providing the venue.
